Zero Four Twenty Beginners Guide Series Ep. 2
A Complete Beginner’s Guide to Every Method
There is no single “right” way to enjoy herb. Every method delivers a different experience, onset time, and intensity. Here’s a clear, honest breakdown of every popular method — plus the pro tips that most people learn the hard way.
Step One: Always Grind Your Herb First
Before you think about which method to use, you need to break down your herb. A grinder is the most efficient and effective way to do this — it creates an even, consistent texture that improves airflow in every method.
How to Use a Grinder:
- Place your herb in the grinder between the teeth
- Twist the top and bottom 8–10 times until resistance stops
- Tap the grinder to loosen stuck pieces
- Empty your ground herb into your chosen device
⭐ Pro Tip: Get a 4-piece grinder. The bottom chamber collects kief — the most potent part of the plant. Sprinkle it on top of a loaded bowl for a noticeably stronger experience.
Filling a Cone: The Fill & Fold Method
Pre-rolled cones are the easiest and most beginner-friendly way to enjoy herb. At ZeroFourTwenty, our Firewatch and Libo-72 cones are packed using the fill and fold method with USA Cones — tight, clean, and consistent every time.
How to Fill a Cone Yourself:
- Grind your herb fine and fluffy for best airflow
- Fill from the wide open end of the cone
- Pack gently with a pen or tool — do not over-compress
- Twist the tip closed to seal
⭐ Pro Tip: Airflow is everything. If it feels like you are pulling through a wall, it is too tight. You want it snug but breathable — the herb should draw easily.
Pipe & Chillum: The Classic
A pipe or chillum is one of the simplest ways to enjoy herb — small, portable, and easy to control. The key to a great pipe experience is the mesh screen.
How to Use a Pipe:
- Drop a mesh screen into the bowl — this stops ground herb from pulling through
- Load herb loosely on top of the screen
- Cover the carb hole with your thumb, apply heat to the corner of the bowl
- Inhale slowly, then release the carb to clear the bowl
⭐ Pro Tip: Always use a mesh screen in a pipe. Without one, ground herb falls through every session and you waste product constantly. Screens cost almost nothing and make a significant difference.
The Bong: Water-Filtered & Smoother
A bong filters vapour through water before it reaches your lungs, producing a cooler, smoother experience with less harshness. It also tends to be more efficient than other methods.
How to Use a Bong:
- Fill with clean water — enough to submerge the bottom of the downstem
- Add 3–4 ice cubes to the neck for a cooler draw
- Pack the bowl piece loosely with ground herb
- Apply heat to the corner of the bowl and inhale slowly
- When ready, pull the bowl piece out completely to clear the chamber
⭐ Pro Tip: The ice cube trick is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to your bong experience. The vapour passes over the ice before hitting your lungs — noticeably cooler, smoother, and far easier on your throat.
The Vaporizer: Best for Flavour
A vaporizer heats herb to a temperature that releases compounds as vapour rather than combusting it. This preserves terpenes better than any other method and is widely considered the cleanest way to experience your herb’s full flavour profile.
How to Use a Vaporizer:
- Grind to a medium consistency — not too fine, not too chunky
- Pack the chamber loosely — airflow is essential
- Set temperature to 170–185°C to start
- Draw slowly and steadily — faster draws reduce vapour quality
⭐ Pro Tip: Temperature is everything with a vaporizer. Start at 170°C for a flavour-forward experience that highlights terpenes. Dial up to 185–200°C for deeper, more intense effects. Lower temperatures taste better. Higher temperatures hit harder. Find your zero.
Hemp Wick vs Lighter: The Detail Most People Miss
Most people use a butane lighter without thinking twice. But butane combustion produces fumes that mix with your herb and alter the flavour profile — especially noticeable with high-quality, terpene-rich flower.
Hemp wick is a natural beeswax-coated hemp string that burns at a lower temperature with zero butane. You light the wick from your lighter, then use the wick flame to ignite your bowl.
- Cleaner burn — no butane fumes to alter taste
- Lower temperature — better terpene preservation
- Cost: a few dollars and lasts months
- Especially worth it with premium, lab-tested herb
⭐ Pro Tip: You spent good money on a quality terpene profile — do not mask it with butane. Hemp wick is the single cheapest upgrade that has the biggest impact on flavour.
