A Beginner’s Guide to Dosing Herb

Nobody teaches you this. You are just supposed to figure it out. We do not think that is good enough — so here is the complete guide to finding your dose, pacing yourself, and what to do if you ever overdo it.

The Golden Rule: Start Low, Go Slow

There is no prize for overdoing it on your first session. The only outcome is an unpleasant experience that puts you off for good. The golden rule of dosing is simple: start with less than you think you need, wait longer than you think you should, and you can always add more — you can never subtract.

Suggested Starting Points:

  • First timer or returning after a long break: 1–2 puffs, then wait 15–20 minutes
  • Occasional enjoyer: 3–4 puffs, same waiting principle applies
  • Regular daily enjoyer: you know your body — still start lower when trying a new strain or product

Method Changes Everything: Onset Times

The biggest mistake beginners make is not how much they take — it is not waiting long enough before taking more. Different methods hit at completely different speeds.

  • Cone, pipe, or bong: onset in 2–10 minutes, peaks around 30 minutes, lasts 1–3 hours
  • Vaporizer: onset in 5–15 minutes, slightly slower but cleaner and more gradual
  • The rule regardless of method: always wait a full 15 minutes before deciding to go again

Understanding Your Tolerance

Tolerance is not about how tough you are. It is biology. Body weight, metabolism, frequency of use, stress levels, and even what you have eaten that day all change how your body responds.

The Three Profiles:

  • First timer or returning user: 1–2 puffs maximum. Your endocannabinoid system needs time to calibrate. Less is genuinely more here.
  • Occasional enjoyer: 3–4 puffs is a solid session. You know your body a little. Still pace yourself — tolerance resets faster than you think.

What a Well-Dosed Session Feels Like

If You Overdo It: You Will Be Okay

Overdoing it is uncomfortable — racing heart, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed. It passes. It always passes. Nobody has ever been seriously harmed by too much herb alone. Here is how to ride it out:

  • Sit or lie down somewhere comfortable — change your environment if you need to
  • Breathe slowly: in for 4 counts, hold for 4, out for 4. Grounding your breath genuinely works.
  • Drink cold water and splash some on your face — physical grounding pulls your attention back
  • Try the black pepper trick: sniff or chew 2–3 black peppercorns. The terpene beta-caryophyllene is known to take the edge off intensity.
  • Remember: within 1–2 hours maximum, the intensity will ease. You are safe. This is temporary.
